The ongoing adventures of Joel & Chiharu as we hop back and forth between hemispheres.

Who

My name's Joel, and I maintain this little corner of cyberspace. I'm originally from Toledo, Ohio, but I tend to be in Japan more often than not the past few years. I was raised a good ol' Midwestern WASP. I studied linguistics and Japanese during undergrad, after which I was an assistant language teacher in Japan for two years. During that time, Chiharu and I were married. Next, we headed back to the States for a couple years to get our Master's degrees. Most recently, we've come back to Japan where Chiharu is working on finishing up her internship and I'm teaching English at the University of Nagasaki.

How

Barring the blog and words sections, I made this site from scratch in XHTML and CSS code. Yeah, that means all those spacing issues and broken links are my fault. The blog and words sections are done with Wordpress, and the photos link will take you to my Flickr account.

Fading Endlessly?

You know those last few seconds of a really good movie, when the picture is fading out and no one in the theater has said anything or started to get up yet, and you're left with just that raw, unfiltered reaction; you know, those few precious seconds right before the person next to you turns and says, "Well?" Yeah, that. Or maybe it's just a lyric from a song I like.
